Never having seen Guilin-

Someone, perhaps my mother,
or some other lovely blond,
told me
that if you didn't eat it all,
it wouldn't come true.

And I thought:
"How nice
that for once I can truly choose my destiny;
how considerate that it all hangs
on my appetite."

But I found that I didn't like
the taste of flour and manifest destiny.
Something about eating "control"
in order to summon a saying
into
existence.
I'd much prefer a form
of fortune fruit pie,
where the opening reveals only
sweetened syrups,
and the only revelation
is that nothing on the inside
is real.
